For many, the end of the year signifies a time to reflect and set goals for the coming year.
For The Arc, there’s no better place to do this than our annual National Convention! The event, which takes place each fall, serves as a gathering for hundreds of passionate advocates and professionals across the disability community.
This year, we were delighted to play host to our opening keynote speaker, Vincenzo Piscopo, Director of Community and Stakeholder Relations at The Coca-Cola Company. His presentation on the importance of perseverance and inclusive employment energized us all!
Over the next two days, attendees took part in dozens of sessions on timely topics like voting accessibility, the sexual assault crisis, education, employment, and how our organizations can best meet the ever-evolving challenges and opportunities facing the disability community. We laughed out loud at an incredible comedy set from internationally known actress, comedian, writer, and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid, and danced all night to the local DC musical flavor with DJ Beauty and the Beatz. The World Series Champions Washington National’s mascots, the racing presidents, even joined us! You may recognize them from their antics on the Washington National’s ballpark field. Their larger-than-life presence brought endless fun and photo ops to the evening.
To conclude the Convention, we were treated to a visit from Walkaround Julia, Sesame Street’s character with autism! Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Senior Vice President for U.S. Social Impact at Sesame Workshop, led an inspiring presentation on how Julia was created and how she is fighting stigma and advancing acceptance.
With January 1st marking the start of a new decade, there’s never been a better time to make BIG resolutions for continued advocacy and hard work towards inclusion.
And speaking of big, if you weren’t able to attend this year, we hope you can join us next year in the “Big Easy” of New Orleans from October 25 – 28, 2020!
